East FM is a community radio station broadcasting on 88.1fm in and around Howick, and on 107.1fm in Botany/FlatBush areas.
Prior to becoming East FM, we were known throughout the community as Howick Village Radio (HVR). HVR provided a solid foundation for a new station to grow from, and in 2015 became a core part of the newly formed Howick Radio Charitable Trust and East FM was born.
We started transmitting our test signal as HVR from our central Howick studio on Waitangi day 2008 and began our first official broadcast in June the same year. Howick Village Radio was set up with the intention of offering a vehicle for local businesses to reach the local community, and to provide a service that both entertains and informs residents in the wider Howick district.
Since our humble beginnings, we now have a volunteer staff of thirty, ranging in age from 8 to 80. Many of our younger DJs use their time at East FM to gain experience in the broadcasting field in conjunction with their tertiary studies, while others use it as a taste tester for potential career options prior to leaving secondary school.
We cater to many different genres of music from jazz to heavy metal and everything in between. Four local schools have regular programs that they prepare, produce, and present themselves to showcase their school's activities and achievements.
Local news and sport, community notices, and localised weather are all important parts of the daily East FM schedule. Non-profit Community groups are encouraged to use our services to promote their special events and are invited to talk about their event live on air with a DJ.
